Five Essentials for a Wintry Valentines Day

Happy three-day-weekend y’all!

Believe it or not, January is half over! Midyear exams for students are this week, which also means we’re almost officially half way done with the school year! Usually I look forward to this time of year, as midterm days allow for time to catch up on grading, organize my classroom, and prepare for the next semester. I am, however, feeling especially nervous this week in light of the coming inauguration. I believe the election and its aftermath played and continues to play a large role in high amounts of emotional output from myself, my students and my colleagues. This week will be particularly difficult, but I hope it renews a sense of community as we actively work to combat hate and bigotry in our school, our city and beyond.

On a lighter note, February is one of my favorite months: (1) I love celebrating and learning about the black community’s contributions to our country and world, (2) I have a week off and my mom, sister, and I have very exciting plans, and (3) the ever obvious Valentine’s Day! Last year, Valentine’s Day in Boston was WICKED cold. The weekend long subzero temperatures were totally unexpected, and threw a serious wrench in all the looks I was ready to rock. This year, I plan to be totally prepared (knowing my luck it’ll be 55°F and sunny) and I thought I’d share my favorite wintry, V-Day inspired finds with you. Whether your plans include date night with your SO or brunch with your gal pals, below you’ll find five essentials for bundling up for a chilly Valentine’s Day out.
