Thoughts on Sisterhood
A few weeks ago, my sister called. Her flight miles were in danger of expiration, and she needed a vacation destination. Fortunately for me, she’s always game for a weekend visit. Though we have been close for almost two decades of my life, the old adage hold trues: our time spent in apart has strengthened an already unbreakable bond.
She landed in Boston early Thursday morning, and we parted this morning with tears in our eyes.
Yesterday, we visited an old friend. While there, I chided at her about one thing or another (as most older siblings do from time to time). My friend, also an eldest child, laughed and responded that my complaints were futile. “That’s just the social context of being a sibling,” he teased. I laughed too, but his comment reminded me of a few thoughts I had earlier this weekend. In the wake of her departure, I wanted to share them here, lest I lose my gratitude for her visit.
On Thursday night, we squeezed into my tiny bathroom, but for once, without the fruitless arguments of the past. My sister stood on a step stool in an attempt to “tower” above me – she’s not very tall and could not see the mirror – brushing her teeth, as I did mine. We giggled and made faces, and I said to her, “Having a sibling is weird.” But what I meant was in that moment, as in many similar moments before it, it occurred to me that the gift of a sibling is just about the most magical one a person can receive.
An Open Letter to My Sister
Dear Cynthia,
Despite the many hats I’ve worn as your older sister (e.g., provider, protector, third parent, chief nagger, Eggo maker, hair washer, back scrubber) my favorite & most important one that is that of first friend because in return, you given me the gift of companionship for life. A companion with whom I can talk for hours on end, laugh boundlessly, dance into the sunset, share space and silence, confide my tears, pray, and grow old. My relationship with you deepens my capacity to have intimate and meaningful connections with others because it is the first relationship that began and grew from mutual agency.
You were the beneficiary of my first jerky, acts of nurturing including but not limited to lectures, life lessons, and braided hair. Those skills make me a better teacher. You forced me to share lotion, hair products, my room, my time. The ability to share makes me a better partner. You teach me to listen authentically, even to things I am not necessarily interested in, and check my airtime. These make me a better friend.
Your presence in my home brings joy to my soul. I thank God that as you continue to walk in your divine purpose, that a sliver of it is dictated just to me.
I love you.
