Music Crush: The (Her) Volumes Part I

With so many people spending more time at home, music that keeps spirits high + stress low is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Hey loves,

How y’all holding up?

While I’m working hard to connect with my students + teach remotely, there’s no denying I have more time on my hands than usual. Fortunately, I know I’m not alone in spending an exorbitant amount of time on social media these days. I’m unsure how long, however, I can avoid my iPhone screen time report.

Of course, most of my time is dedicated to searching for memes to lighten the mood, but I’m also interested in how others are feeling + navigating this uncharted terrain. Over the last two weeks of scrolling, tapping, + watching, the most common sentiment is a hyper-awareness of the way our senses help us experience the fullness of life. Everyday more measures are implemented to belay the spread of the virus + delay the peak of this epidemic. As a result, we see our access to the sights, sounds, tastes, touches, + smells that are our sources of joy + opportunities for connection increasingly reduced.

Many creatives + other entrepreneurs, however, are devising new sensory experiences to provide comfort + a semblance of normalcy. Although, I initially planned to share a collection of hand-crafted, all-female playlists in celebration of Women’s History Month, now, in quarantine week three, it feels even more pertinent to share. Though playlists aren’t as innovative as a digital conference or virtual dance party, please accept them as my small contribution to the war against COVID-19. Scroll down to find a selection of sounds that lift my mood + quiet my anxieties.

Her Vol. 1: Lov(her)

This one is for the lovers. This playlist boasts over three hours of incredibly talented songstresses who have breathed new life into R&B.

90’s Vol. 2: Croon(her)

Between L’s in politics, sports, the economy, + global health, many of us are ready to thrown le whole 2020 eweh. If you’re also feeling nostalgic for simpler days, indulge in this playlist of throwback hits from artists such Brandy, SWV, Toni Braxton, + more.

Her Vol. 5: (Her)mony

Rifts, runs, + acoustic melodies that soothe the soul.

Worship Vol. 2: Prais(her)

Sunday morning bops to get you pumped for this week’s sermon. These aren’t limited to the Sabbath, however, so don’t be shy about blasting this playlist anytime you want (or need a reminder) to give God the glory.

Her Vol. 3: Mov(her)

There are few things more important for your mental health than maintaining your physical health. Take a break from WFH and/or screen time, and move! This thirty minute playlist is perfect for a quick sweat sesh.

That’s it for now! I have at least three other (Her) playlists to share, but currently each is under construction. Tell me, which will you listen to first? Sound off in the comments below + tag me @krystyajay whenever you share to social. I’d love to vibe out with you!
